Rockin' Summer Craft

Happy Thursday!

Can you believe that it is almost June?  I will have our monthly pre-cap tomorrow of all the classes and things happening next month!  We are especially looking forward to our Rustic Open House and seeing so many wonderful faces.

But, before we kick that off, I wanted to share a cute craft I stumbled upon... literally, quite by accident.  I am the Crafts Coordinator for my local MOPS group and am beginning my research for next year.  We have been pondering a lot of different options, but, then, I stumbled across fancy rocks and I think this is a must do for our group!  It is super great because it is using a lot of materials we already have. Let's be real, every one has a little acrylic paint hanging around the house and a handful of rocks.

I am particularly drawn to the dot-based rocks.  I feel like the dots are done with the back end of the paint brush and is a lot easier to control than the brush on an uneven surface.  At this moment, I do need to add that painting is NOT MY JAM.  But, the dots  make this an achievably cute craft for anyone who wants to do this - regardless of age or experience.

I love that these simple patterns can make such a difference and again, perfect for a casual afternoon craft for anyone!

And, because I can't help myself from finding some amazing crafts, here are some... advanced... rocks!  How perfect are these little fairy doors?  And, my son is OBSESSED with all things car, especially classics, and he has a soft spot for VW - so this last one is for him!

What would you put on a painted rock?  If you are looking for a follow up activity, it is really fun to take these bad boys and hide them in the park for others to find!

Summer Fun (From Home)!

Happy Thursday!

I know that school is almost out for my Knox County friends!  We had our last day of preschool already and summer is in full swing around here!  I wanted to share a few of my favorite summer printables for kids and adults alike!

First up, this is an amazing summer reading printable!  It comes in 3 8.5x11inch pieces or a poster size.  Pro tip - you can print the large scale one as a blueprint or engineer print at an office supply store.  I printed mine for $.275 (with a 20% coupon) and it is hanging on our living room wall!  I love the idea of having a reading tracker and it makes it like a game.  It come from and I love it!  I also love that it will help keep me AND my tiny reader on track this summer.  Plus, we can read with purpose too!

And, secondly, time for a little adult coloring!  This link has about a dozen different coloring projects - ranging from super intricate (seriously, can some of these even be colored) to just right!  I also love the coloring book marks - great for little readers and pairs nicely with that reading chart from the last list! You can grab an assortment of options here!  I find that coloring books are nice on-going summer projects for big (and little) people and are great to have to pull out.  Also, this is one of my favorite waiting room options.  Just a little pencil pouch of colored pencils and a folder with coloring sheets can keep us entertained for a while!

If you don't want to print at home, there are tons of adult coloring books at all kinds of places.  And, I am super loving a trend of scrapbook pages that are black and white and ready for you to color them in!  Has anyone seen these?  I saw one on Instagram and now I can't remember who created it - when it comes to me in the middle of the night, I will pass it on to you all!

So, what is your summer go-to activity?!?

Stamp and Scrapbook Expo News!

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I hope you all are having a great week and have had some time to flex a little creativity this week!  It has been really busy here and yesterday was the last day of preschool at our house.  A few minutes of creative work has really helped crush my exhaustion and worry about this huge schedule change!

But, I wanted to let you know that it is time to mark those calendars!  I may be a bit behind, but I just saw that Stamp and Scrapbook Expo have released their schedule, class information, and more for both the shows we will be at this year - Chantilly, VA and Duluth, GA!

Chantilly's show is June 20-21st and we are so excited to be a vendor and a teacher for this class!  Sara is teaching another fabulous Kiwi Lane class that is all about Disney.  These will create two super cute page spreads for your album.  You can get more information about the class in the workshop booklet (page 76-77) and is listed as Kiwi Lane as the instructor.  The full booklet is available here!  More information about the entire event is available here!

We will have tickets for the Chantilly show at the store - usually for a discount!  Stay tuned for more information and a link when it is available!

And, as always, we are headed back to Duluth, Georgia on July 19-20!  We are also teaching the Kiwi Lane class in Duluth (find info on page 70-71).  And, I am really excited to be teaching hand lettering AND chalk lettering in Duluth (page 136-139)!  I am so excited to be making my first trip to the Stamp and Scrapbook Expo and can't wait to see some friendly faces there too!  The full booklet for Duluth is available right here!  You can get more information about the whole event right here!

The tickets for this show will be in the store again, along with pins!  I got a sneak peek at the new pins available for this season of shows and they are so cute.

I want to know, who is planning to go with us this year?!?  Drop us a comment below or on Facebook!  I know it will be an amazing time!

Lawn Fawn Fairy Garden

Hi everyone!

This week is super busy here at the store.  Today is our Say Cheese Disney album class - I can't wait to see those finished albums!  And, tomorrow, Jessica is hosting out Lawn Fawn class for the month.  You can still register online for Jess' class right here!

She is teaching you how to make these ADORABLE terrariums with removable parts to change out seasonally.  Plus, you will learn a ton of tricks to using the interactive dies that Lawn Fawn is famous for!

Last night, when I was trolling around Pinterest looking for fun summer activities, I stumbled on Fairy Gardens!  If you are not familiar with fairy gardens, they are basically doll houses built in small plants for fairies.  They are really popular with kids, especially those that love a little fantasy reading.  And, then I was thinking, how cute are these pieces that Jess is making for a fairy garden - and especially because they can be moved around!

These stamps and dies would be easy for kids to color (and make TONS of them, because paper) and use to play in a garden.  There are tons of other things to create for fairy gardens on Pinterest using household items (I am a particular sucker for the picnic table made from tongue depressors) and a recommended plant list.  All kinds of goodies!  I think this class (and these stamps) would be a great head start on a whole summer of indoor or outdoor fun with fairy gardens!  (Our garden would be inside with silk plants, because I am a certified plant killer.  Seriously, I killed succulents.)

Anyways, I hope you join Jess' class this month!  There are still a few seats available right here!  We would love to see what you create with your gnome terrarium!

Summer Scrapbook Bucket List!

Happy Monday everyone!

I don't know about you, but summer is barreling down on me and I am just not ready for it yet!  This is the last week of preschool and I am both super thrilled to be on summer vacation and a little worried about what we are going to do with all that unstructured time.  Yesterday, I was asking my husband and Anderson what they wanted to do this summer - any goals they wanted to accomplish - to make a summer bucket list!

I love this idea - it gives us a chance to plan out thoughtful activities throughout the summer and it means that I am not scrambling all the time to come up with a plan - that may or may not be a hit.  Also, it helps me plan my scrapbooks and scrapbooking purchases, if I know what we are going to be up to (more or less)!

So, my boys asked to play putt putt, go to a baseball game, go swimming, eat popsicles, go to a museum, and more.  I wanted to share a few summer bucket lists as inspiration (and purchase planning :) ) with you all!

I love that a lot of these things are unstructured (read: no planning on my part!) and a lot are free(ish)!  Having summer plans doesn't have to be expensive and to be honest, we were going to do a lot of these things anyways.  Now ,we just have a little purpose and plan behind them, instead of "mom wants fresh strawberries"!

So, I want to know, what is on your summer bucket list?

Now, go get crafty - and come grab some summer paper lines to document all these magical summer memories!

Happy Friday!

Hey everyone!

I hope you all have had a great week and are ready for an awesome weekend!  We would love to see you for one of our classes this weekend - Inky Chicks and Wood Crafts!  You can still snag a registration spot.

Also, a friendly reminder to grab your seat for the February Retreat AND get those Lawn Fawn orders in for a discount!

But, today, I am going to toss it over to one of our delightful Design Team ladies - Melinda Davis!  She is sharing her experience with a challenge that is getting ready to start on June 1st - so mark your calendar.   Thanks for sharing with us Melinda!!!

Hi, it’s Melinda from the Design Team and I wanted to tell you about something coming up that has been a turning point in my art making.  Have you ever heard of ICAD?  Although it sounds like it should be a computer program, ICAD stands for Index Card A Day. Created by Tammy Garcia (, it’s an on-line art/mixed media challenge.  The idea is that every day during June and July you make a piece of art on an index card – but since index cards are inexpensive, every day items, you are less likely to get too wrapped up in “this is a precious commodity; whatever I do on it/to it/with it has to be perfect, a masterpiece.” ICAD is free (although there is a moderately priced upgrade which gets you some extra guidance and inspiration); there are daily prompts (topical) and weekly themes (materials or techniques), all of which are totally optional.  You can share photos of your cards on Facebook (or not). The main thing is to spend a few minutes each day being creative.
Chevron: acrylic paint (stenciled and scraped); stamped (acrylic paint on a tape core)

Tangerine: clean-up background, collaged scraps, modeling paste through a stencil, buttons

I’ve participated in four ICADs over the last five or six years.  Last year was special for two reasons:  I actually did a card every day (which was a first) and an even more important first, I posted a photo of each one (scary although it did get a little less so as the days went along – I never received or saw a negative comment and it was interesting to see what caught people’s attention). I did use the daily prompts (but on some of my cards, you’d be hard pressed to figure out how I got from the prompt to the result); the weekly themes, not so much. I prepped some cards with backgrounds for busy days and some cards got fine-tuned over several days. Simply put, I made it easy for myself and concentrated on having fun.

Treasure: Distress Oxide clean-up background, painted Tyvek distressed with heat gun
Twister: clean-up background with acrylic marks

I have all of my ICADs in an open tray and I love flipping through them – I can see how my aesthetic has changed, how my color sense has developed, how my techniques have become more complex. And even my early fumbling attempts make me happy because I see they were the stepping stones to the later ones.

Window: acrylic paint background, modeling paste through stencil, circles punched from gel print scraps

Wish: clean-up background overstamped with acrylic paint on jar lids, rubber stamped sentiment

I encourage you to consider ICAD (or any other similar challenge: Inktober and CarveDecember are two that come to mind – Google “on-line art challenge” to find others) – it’s a fun, low/no stress way to ease into an art practice, a change to play with neglected supplies, an opportunity to think “outside the box” and expand your artistic comfort zone. If life gets in the way, don’t quit – just get back on track as soon as you can. I don’t think you’ll ever regret time spent nurturing your creative self.

Poetry: acrylic paint, various stencils, underpaper scrap, drywall tape

These are so cool Melinda!  I love all the techniques and the idea of creating on an index card is amazing!  I also love that you can use index cards for lots of things too, like repurposing your art into bookmarks or little inspirational notes to send to someone!  I will also agree with something Melinda said, that in challenges, it is amazing the support and kindness people share with other creators!  We would love to see what you all create for this challenge (or just because), so feel free to share with us on Facebook or Instagram!

A big thanks to Melinda for sharing this with us!  Drop some love for her in the comments here or on the Facebook post.

Have a great weekend and go get crafty!
